When you are searching for the perfect treatment for your skin, you will quickly discover that there are several alternatives to choose from. Therefore, prior to embarking on a course of treatment, it is vitally important for you to know the exact differences between the two modern alternatives for skin care: diamond and crystal microdermabrasion systems. The crystal system has long been the backbone of conventional skin care treatments, but has recently faced a competing system: the diamond system. Corporations that compete for a governing market share in the industry are constantly broadcasting the disadvantages and advantages of both systems. You may therefore ask which side has the treatment that will be most beneficial for you. Is one really better than the other? Read on to find out some facts which may help you make an informed decision.

How diamond microdermabrasion works

This process is slightly different and somehow produces different results. The process works by means of abrasion. Think of abrasion as a process of grating and scratching against the surface and basically sanding away dirt from the surface of the skin. A typical course diamond microdermabrasion treatment will end with the use of a special diamond tipped, wand device that will sand away dirt and dead skin cells from the surface of your face. Meanwhile, much like the technique used in the crystal microdermabrasion procedure, a special vacuum device will complete the process by sucking away all the dead skin cells and dirt brought to the surface during the treatment. Basically, while the crystal process works by ‘sand blasting’ dead skin cells and dirt off the surface of your skin, the diamond process achieves similar effect through the process of ‘sand papering’ but the end results of a crystal microdermabrasion is more effective than diamond.

How crystal microdermabrasion works

Let us start by looking at how the conventional microdermabrasion system works. The crystal technique is an ablative procedure which means that the treatment works by ablation. The term ‘ablation’ is simply a process that removes the external surface of an object in this case, dead skin cells by making a forceful use of friction and heat. This treatment works by utilizing a special hand held device which causes a release of high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals upon your skin at a very high temperature and rate. The system uses vacuum effect to blast off dead skin cells off of your face and to suck up and store this unwanted debris. Simply put, the crystal microdermabrasion treatment is a form of ‘sand blasting’ dirt and dead skin cells off your face.

It is a question of machine versus man

It is true that both the diamond and crystal microdermabrasion treatments have the same fundamental goal in mind and it is also true that there are significant differences in the techniques employed. For instance, the crystal treatment tends to be more dependent on technology employed during the duration of the treatment. The state of the machine itself utilized by the operator will control the force of the flow of the crystals themselves. In turn, this will affect the strength of the machine’s ability to suction off the dead skin cells. On the other hand, the efficiency of the diamond treatment depends on the person who is operating the machine, and thus guiding you through the process itself. This is because, during the course of the diamond microdermabrasion treatment, the operator of the diamond machine employs a manual pressure technique to achieve the suctioning off the dead skin cells, surface black heads, and other debris.

Your choice of whether to employ the conventional crystal method or go for the more modern diamond process may depend on whether you prefer to place your trust in the machine, or to place superior faith in the ability of your attending esthetician to control the entire process physically. The crystal method costs more because it relies the use of crystals and the results are seen almost right after a session. On the other hand, the diamond treatment makes no use of the crystals and is thus less costly and the results are not as effective as the crystal microdermabrasion.
