Just like going to the hairdresser for regular trims is necessary to keep your hair looking healthy, exfoliation is essential to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
Our skin is constantly regenerating new cells and pushing them to the surface of our skin. Many of these dead skin cells are shed naturally by the body, but sometimes the body needs a little help to ensure all dead skin cells are properly removed. A build up of these cells can clog pores, resulting in breakouts as well as leave your skin dry, flaky and dull.
There are many different ways to exfoliate your skin, and at home we recommend a gentle, yet effective exfoliant that can be used at least once or twice a week to keep your skin at it’s best. If, however, your skin is just not treating you right and you feel like you need a deeper exfoliation, then microdermabrasion is for you!
What is Microdermabrasion?
Table of Contents
Microdermabrasion is performed by a certified medical esthetician, trained plastic surgeon, dermatologist or beauty specialist and involves gently “sanding” the skin to remove the surface layer of skin. A special tool is used to spray exfoliating crystals onto the skin, which will gently buff away all dead skin cells and allow for new skin growth. Microdermabrasion is the perfect alternative to surgical procedures that offer similar benefits.
How Long Does It Take and Does It Hurt?
A facial microdermabrasion treatment takes only 20-30 minutes, however this can take longer if other parts of the body are treated, such as the neck.
A microdermabrasion treatment is painless, however sensitive individuals may experience a slight itching or stinging once the crystals start to get to work. This shouldn’t last long and the skin soon gets used to the sensation. It feels like a relaxing and stimulating massage. Your skin may be slightly pink in the hours following a treatment, but this is only because your blood circulation has been stimulated. Your skin will simply have a healthy flush.
How Does It benefit My Skin?
Microdermabrasion is just wonderful for the skin! Because it removes the surface layer of skin, the new skin growth means your skin will glow beautifully and look very healthy.
Here are a few benefits of this treatment:
- Stimulates collagen production, helping skin to rejuvenate faster and leaving it plump and youthful
- Reduces scarring and prevents and treats acne
- Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Promotes a healthy glow
- Reduces pore size, giving your skin a smoother appearance
- Evens skin tone
- Eliminates whiteheads and blackheads
How Often Should I go?
Microdermabrasion treatments are usually purchased in a package with at least 6-10 treatments scheduled 2 weeks apart, to allow the skin to recover in between. Results are very noticeable after the 5th treatment, however most patients see positive results almost right away.
After your last treatment, you can go once every 2-3 months for maintenance.
